Fiber optic termination refers specifically to the process of attaching a connector to the end of a fiber optic cable. This is a critical step in fiber optic installations as it allows the cable to be connected to other fiber or optical devices, enabling the transmission of data. Proper termination is essential for ensuring optimal signal integrity and minimal loss, which is vital in fiber optic communication networks.

When a fiber optic cable is terminated, the end of the fiber is carefully prepared, which may involve stripping the outer jacket, cleaving the fiber to create a flat surface, and then connecting the appropriate connector. Various types of connectors exist, such as LC, SC, and ST, each serving different applications and environments.

In contrast to termination, splicing, measuring signal loss, and installing cable refer to different processes in fiber optic work. Splicing involves permanently joining two fiber strands, measuring signal loss assesses the performance of fiber links, and installing cable pertains to the physical placement of fiber optic cables in a building or network.
